Food for Thought… Enjoy a Healthier Lifestyle by Building "Family Team Spirit"! As a Spouse or Parent what can you do today to help your family understand the benefits of eating healthier? You’ve heard me say this before but it’s worth repeating; “What you can do through your own efforts is limited, what you can do through the efforts of others in unlimited”. This philosophy not only applies to business but has a great deal to do with developing a Healthy Family Lifestyle as well. "It's not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are." ~ Roy Disney Here’s a cute family story… back in day we had a ring through service from Health Craft to our home to help customers with recipes and cooking instruction on evenings and weekends. When Christina and David were old enough to understand why working together (as a Team) was important to achieving Common Family Goals, we had a family training session on how to go about answering the phone properly and the importance of providing correct information… explaining repeatedly that our customers “Paid our bills”. One evening Christina asked, “Daddy, (very serious) why can’t we pay our own bills?” Needless to say LeAnn and I cracked up, crying with laughter. Obviously, to be effective at building "Family Team Spirit", they need to know "The Why". What would most contribute to a Healthier Family Lifestyle? Do you order Take-Out food on a regular basis? Why? Do your children know how to cook healthy? Why not? Teach your children how to cook, and McDonald's and Burger King cannot educate them how to eat! Build Team Spirit... prepare a healthy meal with your family TODAY? Your family CAN have a Healthier Lifestyle. You CAN achieve your greatest aspirations... both personally and professionally by building “Family Team Spirit” around the “Common Goal” of living a "Healthy Lifestyle". Expect More… Eat Healthier! Memorial Day stands alone as a holiday that arose out of appreciation for and remembrance of every person who gave their lives defending our nation. Most Americans celebrate Memorial Day as the official kick-off of Barbeque Season. Get ready to warm up the coals, pull out the cooler, and create a spread of summer salads and side dishes. Here’s one of our Family’s Favorite Recipes: Mom’s Famous Potato Salad Equipment: Vegetable brush, paring knife, 2-QT covered saucepan or Medium covered Saute Skillet, measuring spoons, French chef’s knife, cutting board and large mixing bowl. Preparation Time: 1 hour 30 minutes – makes 12 servings 4 large red potatoes ½ medium green or red bell pepper, diced 1 medium onion, diced 3 medium radishes, diced 1 stalk celery, diced 4 sweet pickles, diced 2 tablespoons sweet pickle juice ½ cup regular or nonfat mayonnaise 1 tablespoon sugar 1 tablespoon white distilled vinegar Under cold running water, scrub the potatoes with a vegetable brush and remove any surface blemishes with a paring knife. Do not peel. Place the potatoes in the pan, rinse with cold water and pour the water off. The water that clings to the potatoes is sufficient the waterless way (see notes below). Cover the pan, close the vent and cook over medium-low heat. When the cover spins freely on a cushion of water, the vapor seal has formed, 3 to 5 minutes. After forming the seal, cook for 25 to 30 minutes. Don’t peek. Removing the cover will destroy the vapor seal, lengthen the cooking time and may cause the potatoes to burn. Test for doneness with a fork. If not done, cover the pan, close the vent and add 2 tablespoons of water to the rim to reestablish the vapor seal. Cook over low heat 5 to 10 minutes. While the potatoes are cooling, in a mixing bowl, combine the remaining ingredients. When the potatoes have cooled sufficiently, cut in 1/3-inch cubes, add to the mixing bowl and stir gently. Cover and refrigerate for about 1 hour or to 24 hours for a more intense flavor. |
